So what's a guy supposed to do with all of this free time? Yep. Giddyup and ride to somewhere.
Today I decided to ride over to BMW Fort Worth's new location and see how the new place is shaping up, then head to Jacksboro for a hamburger at Herd's and then make a little trek around Possum Kingdom Lake for good measure.
BMW Fort Worth's new location is shaping up nicely. There's still a lot of work to do, but they should do well at the new location (121 and 820). While there I spent a good amount of time talking to Fort Worth Police officer Herman M. He was getting his gorgeous, all-black RT-P checked out. He was looking at the new GS and new RT and new... Real cool guy.
If you're looking for an absolutely simple, yet fantastic burger while in the vicinity of Jacksboro, TX, stop by Herd's Hamburgers just a few blocks north of downtown on 199. Herd's has been around since 1916 and for less than $5 you can get a double/double, chips and a drink. Mmmmmm gooooood.
I usually take FM 4 south just west of Jacksboro and shoot down to Graford before heading to PK on 254. One of the things I always do is make a run out to some cliffs that overlook the lake. Sometimes the gates aren't opened, but sometimes you get lucky and are able to ride up to the top of a mesa that overlooks PK lake.
The Lonesome Dove story was inspired by a couple of the early pioneers and ranchers of the Possum Kingdom area in the mid 1850s - Oliver Loving and Charles Goodnight. Here's a historical marker that explains quite a bit of the story. If you haven't read the book, Lonesome Dove, it's a must read. I'm not a huge fan of westerns, but this is a must read story that transcends genres.
The ranch is still around and thriving.
And not only is the ranch thriving, but the longhorns are thriving too. Check this ol' boy out. I think he's the one who coined the phrase, "Fuck with the bull and you'll get the horns."
